Supplies

  • 1 yard of Ric Rac
  • 1/2 Yard of Stretch Elastic Lace
  • 1 Plastic Circle (like the one on your bra)
  • 1 Plastic Slider (like the one on your bra)
  • Scrap of Ribbon (optional)

First you need to measure you child's head. Measure around where you want the headband to lay. You could also measure a headband that you already have that fits your child.

You want to make the Ric Rac 2/3 of the headband and the elastic lace the other 1/3. Lets just say my child's head was 18 inches around. The Ric Rac is 2/3 which is 12 inches and the elastic lace is 6 inches. Add 2-3 inches of elastic for grow room. Remember to cut 2 pieces for the Ric Rac.

When sewing the slider and plastic ring on, grab one of your bras and study how they thread the slider and ring. I cut the slider out of one of my old bras to help me. So, you sew the elastic to the slider first then thread it through the ring. Then you sew the other end of the elastic lace to the Ric Rac and the Ric Rac's other end to the plastic ring.

This will all make more sense if you study your bra straps.

One finishing touch is to sew a piece around the seams of the Ric Rac.

This makes it look pretty and helps the Ric Rac not to fray.

Done!
